FIRST HAWAIIAN CONTRIBUTES $50,000 TO MARIANAS HIGH SCHOOL;
BANK STARTS EDUCATION FUND TO BENEFIT ALL PUBLIC SCHOOLS
(Susupe, Saipan, May 4, 2007) - First Hawaiian Bank will contribute $50,000 to Marianas High School to renovate classrooms and to purchase much-needed furniture for students. Additionally, the bank will start an education fund for the benefit of all public schools on Saipan, according to an announcement today by Don Horner, president and chief executive officer.
The $50,000 donation was presented to Marianas Principal Karen Borja by First Hawaiian Bank Saipan Area Manager Juan Lizama and Horner.
“Supporting education and our young people is one of the bank's priorities,” according to Horner. “We are pleased to invest in the children of Saipan and CNMI as they truly represent the leaders of tomorrow.”
Lizama, a Marianas High School alum, said “This contribution is particularly special to me since I know firsthand the great benefit it will bring.”
“I am truly overwhelmed by the generosity of First Hawaiian Bank and their willingness to invest in the future of our students,” Borja said. “It takes a whole community to educate a child, and First Hawaiian Bank is truly showing its commitment by this significant donation. Our students have been sitting on broken desks in classrooms that are in vital need of repair. These funds for new classroom desks, paint, flooring materials and other much needed repairs are greatly appreciated. On behalf of the entire MHS dolphin community - thank you and SiYu'us Ma'ase.”
A portion of the contribution will go toward the purchase of building supplies for use by parents, alumni and other interested volunteers to refurbish classrooms. The rest of the money will be used to purchase needed furniture.
In addition to the $50,000 contribution, the bank announced today that it will start a “One Team Education Fund” which will benefit all of the public schools on Saipan. For every product or service sold in either First Hawaiian branch on Saipan between May 7, 2007 and December 31, 2007, the bank will contribute $1 to the “One Team Education Fund”. In early January 2008, the money will be divided up between the various public schools on Saipan and go to the projects that benefit the greatest need in the schools.
Marianas High School is the oldest high school on Saipan having been founded in 1969.
First Hawaiian Bank is one of the largest banks in Micronesia with two branches on Saipan and three branches on Guam. The bank has total assets of over $12 billion.
